Denis Dyack(in Interview Conducted by Omni):Another thing, people ask, “What were those pillars of flesh?” that were in the Forbidden City areas. Have you ever heard of a conqueror named Tamburlaine?

That’s what he did. He used to go through, conquer cities, and build pillars of flesh. So we took those historical facts and made our own stories up with them and really hoped that people would learn things through osmosis.


シリコンナイツの社長であり、ゲームのディレクターであるデニス氏が指摘するように、ロベルトの章のパイアスが変身している仮面の将軍のモデルはティムール朝の初代君主ティムール（1336-1405）である。彼はタメルランという愛称でもしられ、シェイクスピアと同時代の劇作家であるクリストファー・マーロウによる戯曲『タムバレイン大王』のモデルである。エドワードが章の始めでふれる「征服者の物語」というのはこの戯曲と思われる。

ティムールは保証金を払った都市は保護したが、刃向かうものには容赦ない破壊・殺戮をしたという。彼の偉大さを称えるために、虐殺した人の数万の生首でピラミッドを建てたとも、生きた人間を積み重ねレンガとセメントで固めて塔を建てたともいわれる。そう、この史実がパイアスのいけにえの柱のもととなったのだろう…
